Buzz Aldrin’s Speedmaster ST 105.012, which was the actual watch worn on the Moon (and thus the original and only true “Moonwatch”), was later stolen under mysterious circumstances under transit to the Smithsonian Museum in the early 1970s, and remains one of the greatest lost timepieces in history. Indeed, in 1970 when the oxygen tank on Apollo 13 exploded, astronauts used the Speedmaster’s chronograph function to time a crucial 14-second maneuver that allowed them to return to Earth.
