Throughout his Autumn-Winter 1981 collection, Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by the artists he loved—especially Henri Matisse and Fernand Léger, whose patterns and colors deeply influenced him.
Yet the watercolours in the Musée d’Orsay show, painted by Yves Saint Laurent when he was 21, of frivolous pineapple headdresses and flower-laden follies, had a quick, easy, exultant hand akin to Raoul Dufy’s. The ‘Sunflowers’ jacket was created as part of Yves Saint Laurent’s 1988 Spring-Summer collection, which paid tribute to master painters he admired, including Matisse, Braque, Picasso and Van Gogh.The quantity of paintings alone was staggering, including numerous major works by Degas, Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Mondrian, Leger and many other, mostly modern, masters, as well as marble sculptures, bronze figurines, cameos and exquisite porcelain vases.
